Kirsty Gray founded Family Wise after she saw an opportunity to make genealogy and people finding into a career.

After previously working as a maths and science teacher, Kirsty started the company in 2012 as a solopreneur. She now employs close to 40 staff members around the world and the company has a High Street presence in the market town of Calne, Wiltshire.

The company offers four core services to assist clients with both genealogical and legal needs. These are probate research, family history, people finding, and DNA analysis.

Their probate services assists clients in tracing missing heirs when someone has passed away without leaving a will. In such cases, the deceased’s name is often added to the Bona Vacantia List, and the company helps locate rightful heirs.

A key part of their operations involved tracking and managing tasks. David Walsh, Case Management and Training Support Lead explains that when the company first started the research team relied on a mix of spreadsheets and memory.

He said: “The research team is superb at holding information in their heads. In the early days we used to make mental notes about who called and when was best to call them back.

“Our numbers were smaller back then so this method was just about working for us.”

However, this quickly became inefficient as their case numbers increased and their business scaled and expanded.

To keep up with this demand, Managing Director, Kirsty needed to find a product that streamlined their work processes ensuring that the team could focus their efforts on their primary task of serving their customers.
